Trusting God: Letting Go of Fear and Holding On to Faith
Trusting God: Letting Go of Fear and Holding On to Faith
Have you ever felt like you were drowning in fear, unsure of where to turn or how to find safety? Imagine a swimmer caught in a rip current. Instead of trusting the lifeguard’s instructions to relax and float, panic sets in. He fights against the waves, exhausting himself, and making rescue more difficult. In life, we often struggle with trusting God in the same way—clinging to fear rather than surrendering to His guidance. But the truth is, the tighter we hold on to fear, the harder it becomes to find peace. Instead, we must learn to let go and trust in the One who promises to be with us through every storm.
God Protects Us in All Situations
Psalm 91 vividly illustrates the variety of dangers we face—surprise attacks, disease, demonic forces, violence, war, and even wild animals. Yet, through all these perils, God offers us refuge. Scholars suggest that this psalm may have been used as a prayer for protection before battle, as a song of thanksgiving after healing, or as a cry for safety in the temple. Regardless of its historical context, the message is clear: God is our ultimate protector, whether at home, work, school, or anywhere else life takes us.
The image of God as a shelter is repeated throughout Scripture. In Psalm 46:1, we are reminded that God is “our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Just like the swimmer who must trust the lifeguard instead of fighting the current, we must learn to rest in the safety of God's promises rather than struggling in fear.
God Watches Over Us Night and Day
Verses 5 and 6 of Psalm 91 remind us that we need not fear the terror of night or the dangers of the day. A powerful illustration of this comes from a Native American tradition where young braves were blindfolded and left alone in the woods overnight. When morning came, they would remove the blindfold to find their father standing nearby, watching over them the entire time. Likewise, our Heavenly Father never leaves our side, even when we cannot see Him.
The psalm describes how God commands His angels concerning us, to guard us in all our ways (v. 11). This divine protection is not about preventing every hardship but about ensuring that nothing can ultimately harm our soul. Just as the young brave in the story learned to trust that he was never alone, we too can trust that God’s presence surrounds us, even when we feel abandoned.
God Provides a Safe Journey Through Life
In verse 3, we read that God delivers us from the “snare of the fowler.” This means He guides us away from unseen traps if we stay close to Him. Life is full of hidden dangers, and only God knows the safest path. Sometimes, like the psalmist who witnessed thousands falling in battle, we won’t understand why we are spared while others suffer. But we can trust that God’s purpose is at work in our lives, even when we can’t see the full picture.
Imagine again the swimmer caught in a current. If he fights against it, he tires quickly. But if he follows the lifeguard’s voice and floats, he will be guided to safety. In the same way, God provides a way through life’s uncertainties—our job is to trust Him rather than fight against His leading.
God Gives Us Power Over Our Fears
Trusting God means recognizing that our fears do not have the final say. Jesus tells us in Matthew 10:28 not to fear those who can only harm the body but to trust in the One who holds our soul. Death is not the worst thing that can happen to a believer—in Christ, we have the promise of eternal life. Just as Jesus triumphed over death, we too will rise with Him and live forever.
When we put our trust in God, fear loses its power over us. Isaiah 41:10 reminds us, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
God Never Lets Go of Us
One of the hardest things for a parent is letting go of their child, trusting that they will find their way. But just as a mother eagle teaches her young to fly by letting them fall and catching them, God allows us to face challenges so we can grow. Yet, He never truly lets go. Psalm 91:14-16 reassures us that because we love Him, He will protect us, answer us, and satisfy us with His salvation.
Even when we stumble, God is there. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding; in all our ways acknowledge Him, and He will make our paths straight. Like the lifeguard reaching out to save a drowning swimmer, God never stops reaching for us—we only need to trust Him and take His hand.
Holding On to the Hope of God’s Love
When life’s struggles overwhelm us, it’s easy to feel like God has let us go. But Jesus promises in John 10:27-29 that no one can snatch us from His hand. Even when our grip on God weakens, His grip on us never does. This is our comfort, our refuge, and our strength.
So, are you holding on to fear, or are you ready to let go and trust in God’s protection? No matter what you’re facing, remember: God is with you, He loves you, and He will never let you go.
